What is the difference between the “base fluids” Normal Saline (NS) and Lactated Ringer (LR)?

Normal saline and Lactated Ringer’s (LR) are fluids used to rehydrate the body, but they have a few key differences.

Normal saline is simply salt water that helps with general hydration.

Lactated Ringer’s has extra electrolytes like potassium and calcium. It's designed to more closely match what’s naturally in your blood. It also helps balance the body’s pH, which is especially helpful after surgery, trauma, or fluid loss.

Both are safe and effective– the best choice just depends on your body’s needs!
